Question:

I have a question with regards to window well repairs. I have a newer home - built in 1999. The window wells have come away from the house - the bolts have torn loose from the basement. Also, the window wells appear to be quite high. There is a 6 - 10" difference between the top of the window well and the top of the ground. This is a potential tripping hazard for my toddler. Another concern is the drainage pipe in the window well. In one of the window wells, the pipe is exposed, but there is no screen over the drain tube, so the rocks can fall into the pipe. I am not sure what the other one is like, since it is not exposed.

Answer:

The window wells can be re-attached but I would not take them away as this is one of he main run-off drainage systems you have. The 'pipe' you speak of should be filled wiht gravel to ensure long-term functionality. If there is a concern for safety, there are screen caps that can be made for them but the wells should not be tampered with.
