Although I rent an apartment I still listen to your show almost every Saturday morning out of London, Ontario. You and John are very entertaining and incredibly informative. I am writing about something you covered yesterday. A septic system- my sister and her partner have a cement tank and it is just the two of them. Could you briefly review the why behind the yeast monthly and the pumping out every 10 or so years. I passed the info along to my sis but I wasn't very clear as to the whys.
Answer:
A septic system works on the principle of bacterial action. With only two people contributing waste to it, there may not be sufficient bacterial action to keep breaking things down. For that reason, I suggest dumping a package of bakers' yeast down the toilet once a month. If a very minimum of non-biodegradables is dumped down the sinks, this should keep the tank from having to be pumped more often than every ten or so years.
