Question:

Discovered crack in ceiling - above this crack is where there are two bathrooms back to back - the cracked area is moist to the touch - how do we figure out the origin of problem? How panicked should I be?

Answer:

If it's moist, it's a clear indication of a leak. Check first to see if the toilets are firm on their moorings because this is the most common cause of this kind of failure. It may be something as simple as changing a wax ring. You should attend to it as soon as possible though and don't stand under it in the meantime.
