I am building a rain barrel from a large plastic drum. My problem is I want a tap in the bottom. Can you suggest where I might purchase such an Item, or how I would go about putting such an item in this barrel.

I'd block up the barrel on a couple of peices of 6X6 or some such and then just get a tap with a threaded entry end. You can also buy rubber gasket material that can be cut to whatever size you might want and once your drill the appropriate sized hole wherever you want it ont he barrel, you put a gasket on the inside and the outside and tighten it up. I've used this system and never had one drop of leak around it. I've always been careful though never to shut the water off too tightly nor open it too wide so there's be no lateral pressure on the valve stem.
