We live in a High Ranch home in the country (with a septic system). Our basement is partially finished, we want to move our washer and dryer from upstairs to the basement before starting renovations. Is it necessary to have a pump for the washer to move water up to the septic? The basement floor to natural ground is 40”.

At 40" I don't see a need for a pump. Actually, if the drian is 40", you'll probably be pumping water up about 48" and even there, I don't see a need for it. Be sure to include a trap in that drain line though.
