We purchased a new house three years ago. Last winter we noticed there was occasionally water dripping sound in ensuite after we used bath or toilet. This year we can clearly hear loud water ticking sound, every time after we flush the toilet, empty the bathtub or washbasin. The noise sounds like that water drops are dripping down and hit the hot air ducts which is located underneath the floor of ensuite. It seems the water dripping appears mainly in the winter time. Would you please advise us what might cause such noise? Can the water dropping cause damage to the house frame and foundation? How to fix it?
Answer:
This sounds vey much like a loose fitting where the main drain from the toilet attaches to the stack. You'll have to gain access to that joint and address it there. It can cause eventual damage to the duct, the ceiling below it, and the wooden framework in that area. It also encourages mold to form and that can become a health hazard.
