Question:

Everytime I do laundry or use a large quantity of water (ie bathtub) we get a terrible odour from the basement. It is often worse when the weather is cold. There is a toilet not being used downstairs but, we have taken steps to plug it to ensure no fumes escape. Have you any suggestions as to where the smell could be coming from? It is a dry unfinished basement.

Answer:

Very possibly the soil pipe leading to the main soil pipe is partially blocked. You might try inserting a snake near the laundry tub and sending it down far enough to go past the opposite wall of the basement. If it has a cutting claw on the end of it, it should do the trick.
