Question:

We recently bought a house that was built two years ago. We seem to be having a plumbing problem that I believe maybe due to a heating problem as well. One of the bedrooms in the front of the house is always cold no matter what we set the temperature at. We have closed off/almsot off any vents in rooms that are not necessary, yet the room is still freezing. Now since this cold snap we have been having a problem with the hot water pipe that runs to the bathroom beside this room. It seems to be freezing all the way back to the basement where the line comes out. We have to run the water for an hour sometimes to get through the blockage. Is there anything we can do to fix this or would this be a construction/heating problem?

Answer:

If the pipes had frozen, you wouldn't be getting anything out of them at all but neither should you be turning heat off to any of the rooms because that's inviting trouble. If there is a danger of frost, try letting a tap run at a fast drip constantly until that danger is past. Believe me, its worth it. You may be dealing with a less than practical construction problem and dealing with it will have to start with dis-assembly.
