I live in the country and have a 12 yr old septic system .lately whenever i'm doing a load of lundry i can smell spectic coming from my exhaust pipe on the roof . the septic tank itself was pumped about 2 yrs ago . what causes this smell and should i be concern that there is something wrong with my septic system ?
Answer:
That is quite normal as that is how the sewer gasses escape - keeps the whole thing from backing up or blowing up! The reason you didn't smell it in the past could be due to air currents that are now sweeping it toward where you are. If it continues, you might try a temporarty extesion of a foot or so to the stack. If it works, you can make the change more lasting.
