I have just recently noticed a drip down my main drain (3") in the basement. At first I thought it was my upstairs toilet and took it out and reseated it with new wax ring. The problem persisted. I then noticed that the drip also ocurred when the bath or sink in the same bathroom drained. I cut a hole in the ceiling below and could not feel or see any water. I did not put any screws or nails in the wall but noticed that the previous owner had installed a shelf on opposite wall. Sure enough this was the problem and it took several years for the screw to rust and leak water. My question is what is the best way to seal this screw hole with out taking out a piece of the wall and adding an insert to the PVC pipe. Would caulk work?
Answer:
I'd glue a patch onto the hole with ordinary ABS glue and then tape it tight with black electrician's tape. Repairs I've made like this have lasted many years and still show no signs of giving up.
