I have a field stone house built in approximately 1895. Of course, the plumbing wasn't installed until later but the soil stack, which is cast iron, goes right down through a hallway. Now, we are planning an upstairs bathroom renovation, and I would like to move this drain inside a wall. What sort of piping is best to use in my situation (copper, plastic, ?)? I will need to join up with the cast iron in the crawl space area and I will also need to replace the vents through the roof. In a nutshell, what is the best way to do all these things? Where can I find information as far as what is required for building code?
Answer:
You'll need a plumbing permit for this so that looks after how and to what standards you do it. You'll probably be using ABS black plastic line but I'm always reluctant to do away with the cast lines because they're great sound absorbers. Sometimes there's no real way around them.
