I am installing a new 2 piece bath on the second floor which is on the opposite side of the house from the main plumbing. I plan to install all new venting, draining and intake plumbing to the new bath. Do the toilet and sink each have to have their own line for venting to the main stack that will go out? Does the main vent have to go out the roof or can it go out the wall under the eave? Is there some sort of cap that is commonly used to cover the vent opening to prevent water, critters from coming in?
Answer:
The norm in cases like this is for the toilet drain line to serve as a vent as it goes up into the attic and there, it can be T-ed into the main plumbing stack so both toilet and sink are vented. The sink should be within four or five feet of the stack for efficient venting.
