Question:

We are getting a sewer smell (rotten eggs type) in our main floor washroom (we have a bungalow). I have replaced the toilet wax seal but the smell persists. In checking things out, i've found that the overflow in the sink is not draining. When i pour water in the overflow, it comes back out into the sink. Is this a matter of getting a flexible brush in there and trying to unclog it? I have read that a 50/50 bleach and water misture will kill whatever gunk is in there. Is bleach safe for our septic system as well? I have heard you mention the overflow in your radio show, but cannot recall your solution.

Answer:

A three-foot length of strong cord (blind cord?) fished down through the overflow can help. Once you have the cord in there, tie a piece of an old rag (6"X6" to it and slide it through a couple of times. Now, replace the rag with one of the same size and drage it through again a couple of times. This will clean the chanel and that should look after the odour. This may mean taking the drain portion of the sink apart so you have better access.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
