Question:

Hello, we recently purchased a production home and were advised to insulate the hot and cold water pipes running within the (unfinished) basement ceiling. I have a few related questions: Is this a good idea? Apart from the perceived economic benefit are there any others? What, if any are the disadvantages? What pipe insulation would you recommend?

Answer:

Unless the distance from the hot water tank to the various bathrooms and kitchen is over forty feet, I wouldn't bother insulating the supply lines. The money spent on insulation will take its time coming back to you and that is not really what its all about. If I had to insulate the lines, I would probably use the foam, pre-formed insulating sleeves and tape them without compressing their diameters. At Ts and elbows I'd want to use more insulation that along he runs.
