I caught your winterizing tip for air conditioners and agree that a board on top to protect the units Condenser fan from getting damaged/bent from snow load or ice falling from the roof. The other good thing to do to minimize attracting mice is to turn off the circuit breaker to the unit. The compressor has a heater (around 25 Watts) that provides the mice with a warm place for winter. They also tend to remove the internal noise baffling insulation for nesting material. The circuit breaker should be turned back on in the spring for at least 24 hours before using the unit. This heater is used to drive off any liquid refrigerant that migrates to the compressor. The compressor cannot compress liquid refrigerant and will therefore be damaged if this heater has not been given enough time to boil off the liquid refrigerant.
