Question:

we got alot of rain here in hamilton (ON) two weeks ago my house has no sewers. the grade of the house from the road has a slope towards the house. there is a hole in the floor at the back of the house(a clay 4" drain) but with all that rain the water started coming up the hole and after a while the water started coming up the cracks in the floor(clear water) the water came in through the floor until it stopped raining then it slowly subsided. there is no sump pit or pump? beside the drain there is a rectangular concrete patch could this be an old pit for a sump pump? should i try to bust up the concrete and see if there is a pit with weepers going to the pit?

Answer:

Its quite possible that the patch is hiding a sump pit but you won't know that for sure until you open it up. Because of your situation, you'll have to break up at least a large portion of the basement floor anyway because you'll want to install a sump pump.
