Question:

We are experiencing major sewer smell in our basement bathroom. We have recently intalled a new septic system (at a cost of $14000) and we're wondering if this could be the source of the problem. The basement bathroom is connected to the septic system through a sludge pump. The pump works well, since I have tried it several times. Would you have any idea as to what the source of the smell could be?

Answer:

The seal on that sludge pump cap may well be leaking and that will give you this kind of an odour before anything else.
