Question:

We live in a home built in 1915. Water appears to be coming up through the basement floor rather then from around the foundation. The floor is covered in a layer of cracked and uneven cement. The basement walls are 18" thick and made of stone. Do we need to tile around the outside of the home or should we tile from the inside? All recommendations and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

I don't know that you'll be able to solve this in one step. You'll probably have to install a sump pit and sump pump and pour a proper floor. Following that, you may still have to excavate all around the foundation and do a number on that. I know this may make the basement less than deep enough for much but it would be much more profitable to raise the house and add to the top of the foundation wall that to dig down inside.
