I'm building a new home in Windsor, Ontario and would appreciate your recommendation regarding forced air furnace accessories such as electronic air cleaner and humidifier. The furnace people are also suggesting a media air cleaner and HRV with simplified duct. Of course all of this adds up to a whole bunch of money.

If I'm going to put an air cleaner on the furnace, it will have to look after both gasses and atmosphere-borne particles. As far as a humidifier goes, only the "Flow through" type is really worth the money because it uses all the water supplied to it thereby reducing the possibility of moulds from it.
