At the present time there is a forced air electric furnace, that we would like to replace with a propane furnace which is available to me from a friend. I understand that you can rent or lease a big propane tank for this purpose. What do you think?

Its not going to save you a whole lot of money to make the change on this basis and you'll be putting more into preventive maintenance with the fuel burner.
