I get conflicting advice re the direction of the fan in summer vs winter - some say push down in winter & counter clockwise in summer to bring up cool, others say the opposite and still others say clockwise all year round - expert advice please.

These things move such tremendous amounts of air that at slow speed I keep mine on all the time pushing air down. If you have it taking air upward, it can (and will) take all atmospheric impurities and stick them to the ceiling in the immediate are and I don't want that because for one thing, it forces me to paint more often.
