Question:

I have a cottage that I am going to put a pump in the boathouse to bring water in, it will be picking up surface water, (we won't be drinking it-it's for washing only, we have a composting toilet). How far out from the shore line and how deep should it go to avoid as much silt and gasloines and stuff?

Answer:

Don't forget oil floats so there won't be a great big problem with that and silt is at the bottom so that should not be a problem. I'd probably float the foot valve two feet off the bottom in at least four feet of water. Also, there should be a large screen frame around the foot valve so it doesn't pick up grasses and the like. Putting it inside a platic milk case that is clad in screening should keep water flowing toward it and the grasses and fishes out.
