Question:

I have a cottage that I am going to put a pump in the boathouse to bring water in, it will be picking up surface water, (we won't be drinking it-it's for washing only, we have a composting toilet). How far out from the shore line and how deep should it go to avoid as much silt and gasloines and stuff? I was told that I had to go out about 40-50 feet from shore and 2-3 feet from bottom. Is this accurate or just a ploy to buy a 3/4 hp jet pump instaed of the 1/2 hp.? The reason given was a lot of sediment is stirred up closer than that to the shoreline so it's better to go further

Answer:

Certainly the deeper the water and the farther out you go the better your chances of getting less sediment but I know of places that have cliffs at water's edge and you certainly won't go out 50 feet there. I think if I had the proper conditions, I'd probbly want to go out 40 or 50 feet though but I don't think that warrants a larger motor.
