The fridge in question is "encased" under the sink in a tiny room in a rooming house. When the dial inside the fridge is turned up to the maximum, the motor overworks, producing so much heat (which is nice in the winter, but not nice in the summer...) that it nullifies the work of the air conditioner also in the room. When turned down 2 notches, the fridge still heats up a lot, but not as badly as when it is turned up to the maximum (#8 on the dial). The fridge is located under the sink in the room, the sink, in effect, providing little room for the hot air to diffuse. It is a tiny room.

Besides this not being good for the fridge, it is also a fire hazard so you'll have to find some way of ventilating the area around the fridge. A small fan might be introduced to get the heat out of there. It should not blow past the coils as that defeats the purpose.
