Question:

First off the one good thing about going to work at 6:30 a.m. on Saurday's is I get to listen to your show on the way to work. My question is in regard to air to air exchangers. We just purchased a brand new house that has one in it. It has a low and high speed motor and helps circulate the air in the house. There is switches in the bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen if you want to turn it on for a short period of time at a high speed. The builder told me it could go all winter that it would remove the humidity out of the house. But now someone told me I was just wasting money having it run and sending my energy costs through the roof. Can you help me out.

Answer:

If a house has an air exchanger that appliance should be on all the time because the house is very well sealed and not having it on can constitute a hazard to the occupants' health. Do not though, expect it to remove the steam from the bathroom of the kitchen beccause it just won't do that. In theory it is supposed to but I've seen soo many to accept that at face value. You still need a 110 CFM exhaust fan in the bathroom and a good range hood fan.
