Question:

My niece just moved into her new house, which has a washer and drier closet of her kitchen. The depth of the closet is only approximately 28 inches. She complained to the builder that there was insufficient room to hook up the washer and drier. The builder saying there is lots of room came over and proceeded to hook up the appliances. My question: is there a building code, plumping code or fire code which stipulates/regulates clearances behind washers and drier? Although they are now working, the hoses going into the washer has a sharp 90 degree bend just after leaving the washer and the drier vent hose is partly collapsed.

Answer:

The appliances' ownership manuals are the best guides and neither will permit the conditions you describe. For codes you'll have to turn to your local building authority (city hall) because they do vary greatly from one municipality to another. I seldom pay attention to codes because they are too minimal so I'm not even familiar with by far the majority of them.
