We were considering an expansion into our attic space and discovered roof trusses were used. Is there anyway to expand into this space without completely removing the roof and redoing it? Is it possible to build support from inside with beams that take the weight to the outside walls and open up the space without removing the roof? It is a about 1/2 the house or 20' by 30' the rest of the house has vaulted ceilings and different trusses. The wall that divides the "great" room with the vaulted ceiling from the rest of the house was built to load bearing specifications.
Answer:
Trusses are engineered to support a lot of weight but only if all the webbing is left alone.
