Question:

When I was re-insulating our attic this week, I noticed a 12" rotting piece on the underside of the roofing plywood. Since we are not planning on re-shingling for at least another 3 years, can I patch this from the attic side by placing a piece of plywood over top of the affected area and applying caulking or whatever?

Answer:

You can do that but you might be better off just to lay a piece of plywood in under it, then nailing a strap across the two rafters enclosing it and stuffing something in there to brace your patch against the roof sheathing. I'd like to see a bit of air circulating there so rot doesn't spread as quickly.
