Question:

I'd like to know if you are aware of a product, such as a pan or a tray, that can be installed (suspended) below a roof vent that is installed on the slope of a roof. I have a roof with vents located in the slope, about 1/3 from the peak. I know this is not an ideal installation but it seems to be providing adequate ventilation. My problem is that, on occassion, snow and water is able to enter the attic area, through the vent, causing an accumulation of moisture in the insulation. So, is there any product available that I can install below these vents that will capture this moisture (not a very large amount) and hold it until it is able to evapourate thus preventing the moisture from reaching the insultation.

Answer:

The design of the mushroom vents is such that snow and rain cannot enter so it is possible that the cap on yours has been raised. It doesn't take much. You much so you might consider pushing it back down a half inch or so. I have seen home made systems such as you describe but they certainly are not fool-proof. A heavy, driven rain will make them overflow and besides, where there is water there is life so it has the potential to attract all kinds of critters that don't even pay rent.
