Question:

This is a "25 year" shingle. The shingles have what appears to be small "cracks" in them. I thought it could be from hail damage since we had a recent severe storm. One contractor says the roof is damaged and must be replaced and he must remove the existing shingles because he can't roof over this type. The insurance adjuster and their contractor representative said it is not hail damage and there is nothing wrong with my shingles and that this is normal wear for this kind of shingle after 10 years. However the adjuster did say I had hail damage to my roof vents, evestroff, and downspouts. The adjuster also said that the manufacturer knows of this and ignores resolution. I asked the adjuster to put this all in writng in case I sell my house and an inspector says there is roof damage. Also, I don't want additional roof damage in the future as a result of this. Should I be concerned? What are your thoughts on what I should do now?

Answer:

I am not about to get into brand names of any kind- but you appear to have exhausted all your options except to record what you have and then confront the manufacturer if need arise. In the meantime, you might try to get in touch with others who have the same product and the same complaints because few things get as much of any manufacturer's attention that a threat of class action. Your lawyer can tell you a lot more about this.
