I have a 7 yr. old home with 20 yr.shingles. The tips of the shingles are starting to curl especially the side of the house that gets the most sun. The supplier told me the company is no longer in business. In her past experience with this problem, the supplier assured her its just a esteadic thing, the shingles are sealed and not to worry. She also said to make sure there is enough venting. 1 vent for every 200 sq. ft. of roof. I have 9 gravity style vents. Do you have any suggestions? Have you ever heard of this condition? Is she correct?
Answer:
Besides production line problems, the only thing that can cause this sort of thing is a lack of attic ventilation. Here is something to consider; It is nearly impossible to over ventilate the average residential attic. It is as important for air to have access to the cavity from under the eaves as it is for air to have an opportunity to exhaust as high up on the roof as possible. Proper soffit venting in combination with “U” channels and gable-to-gable baffled ridge venting appears to be the most cost effective, passive way of accomplishing this.
