Question:

Do you know if removing a Masard roof and redoing the design to be a box around the windows is a huge job or if it is fairly straight-forward? The house is about 30'D by 50'W Ranch. I have been told about $6K to remove the Mansard roof. Does this sound about right? Am I correct in assuming the Mansard is purely cosmetic and that supports for the minor extension in the mansard should already be in place?

Answer:

I can't talke to you about costs because I have no idea where you live in the first place and I normally don't offer suggestions in that field. Mansards normally come off and then dormers are built to accommodate the windows. The whole framework from the floor of the second level is effected usually so be prepared.
