Question:

I recently had my roof replaced because we were getting bubbling plaster and paint in our living room where the chimney came down. It was slow and gradual. The roof was gettinga bit old so I thought I'd replace it to see if it would help. Now my wife has just called me and informed me that there is water dripping in the living room right by the fireplace. I have called the roofer but as yet have not heard back. Should I also be calling a chimney repair company. I have had an eavestrough and downspout installed on the upper roofto try and redirect the water.

Answer:

You'll want to ask the roofer if the flashings around the chimney were addressed when they re-did the shingles because that's what roofers do. There is probably no point in calling a mason for the chimney until the condition of the flashings is addressed.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
