Question:

I don't want my older parents to get ripped off by the roofer. I would like to know on their behalf: Should tar paper cover the whole roof prior to re-shingling or partially tarpaper? The roof man said only partially but I think it should be the whole roof. What type of grade/weight of shingles are best too?

Answer:

Ice and water shield should go along the lower portion of each roof panel. It should go high enough to be at least nine inches past the perimeter wall of the house. From there to the ridge, there should be tarpaper. The most cost effective shingles on the market today are 20-year, asphalt shingles. There should also be a ridge vent with baffles installed on the roof so it goes from gable to gable. Good luck!
