Question:

I would like to know how you calculate linear footage. I recently had new shingles put on my house and was charged for 230 linear feet of new roof decking. When I asked one of the roofers how the decking looked he said not bad. He said they had to only replace a small amount near the peak. The side he was working on is not close to any other house. The other side of the house is close to my neighbour's house. The house is approx. 850 sq. ft.

Answer:

I can only imagine this to depend on what kind of decking you have on the roof. If it happens to be 1X6 or 1X8, that explains itself. If on the other hand, the decking is plywood, 230 feet of plywood multiplied by 4 tells me you had 920 square feet of decking replaced and on an 850 sq. ft. structure, that's about the whole roof. Your question to the roofer is "230 what? Square feet? Linear feet of what?" and do your calculations from there.
