Question:

We have an existing free-floating deck - on blocks - 16 by 20 feet. We,d like to screen it in by putting a roof overhead - using the suntuff corrugated sheeting in clear because we have a north-facing yard and don't get a lot of sun. Can you make any recommendations on this type of product - We,re concerned about yellowing, snow load, etc. Also much to my surprise, when i phoned the city they said the support pilings for the porch would have to go down 5 feet, and have a 25 inch pad - isn't that a bit of overkill?

Answer:

When you submit your plans for a building permit, the city rep. may very well change the requirements. Other than certain fears regarding wind, I have no problem with your idea and I'd have to be convinced that you need any more than bloacks to support it on.
