Question:

I have a span of 16 ft.that will hang from joist hangers on one side and will sit on a beam on the other side, i can not find out what size of lumber to use for the span. The roof is just a shed roof and will have a slope of 1/4" in 12",(4" total") so I do not think there will be a great deal of weight. Can I use 2x4's, 2x6's or 2x8's? I would rather spend a little more and be safe.

Answer:

For a 16' span about your only choice will a truss joist engineered for the purpose. The slope is such that there is no regularly milled lumber for it. The weight, even without snow and/or ice is going to be substantial and you have to provide for it.
