The combination of sub-zero temperatures and sun causes very treacherous ice-buildup on the concrete steps in front of my front door because of dripping from my eavestroughs. Is there a way to get rid of the ice without damaging the concrete?
Answer:
Get yourself some urea at your local nursery and sprinkle it on there. It is also good to use on the roof above the entrance. "The roof-ice melting medium most highly recommended is called urea and it is available at a local nursery. Care must be taken though as this is a garden fertilizer and may over-fertilize foundation plants. A sheet of 6mm polyethylene over the plants should do some good but again, care must be taken as to where it would be dumped in the spring."
