Question:

I was using a shower/bathroom cleaner that did not indicate on the bottle that it would remove any colour, so whilst cleaning my bathroom I set this spray bottle container on my bathroom countertop and needless to say there must have been some solution on the outside of this bottle as where it was sitting on the countertop it has removed the colour. Not only that but I have another spot that has the colour removed, but this looks like it is from one of the hair sprays that I use. I do not want to replace the counter top as all the countertops in my home which is 3,000 sq feet match. I was wondering about using a grey shoe polish and rub it in and then protect it with some sort of countertop sealer (whatever).

Answer:

I hope you don't object to doilies. Once a plastic laminate counter top loses colour, it means the surface has been permeated and there is no way of getting it back. You might try something else: Holes in plastic laminates such as this counter can often be repaired by routing a trough into which an 8X8" (or larger) ceramic tile is installed a sixteenth of an inch or so proud. This patches the hole to where it is no longer a problem and at the same time, creates a holder which can ensure that hair spray and the like are kept from direct contact with the relatively delicate plastic laminate top. I've used this method with great success in kitchens where kettle cords have done a number on them.
