Question:

We purchased a 9 year old home with an unfinished basement. In sweeping the floors, a very fine dust coming off the walls. Since we will be using the area for storage and a work area (including office type work), is there anything that can be sprayed on the walls and floor to keep the dust from coming off?

Answer:

Any good masonry sealer will do the job for you. Cover the walls with it too because over 90% of the house dust comes from here. Storage in the basement (from boxes and cabinets to furniture) has to take into consideration that air movement around everything down there is important to keep down molds, rust and other forms of corrosion. The rule of thumb is 'nothing directly on the floor and no large surfaces to be touching walls'. The basement must still be ventilated as much as possible - even if this means the use of fans and windows slightly opened at strategic times.
