Question:

One side of my shed's roof will be 12 feet across by 8 feet down. Is it necessary, when installing the 4x8 under-sheathing, to lay the sheets with the 8 foot edge going across the roof? Three sheets running from the ridge pole to the eves would fit just nicely and eliminate any cutting. Secondly, when installing the tarpaper, how much of an overlap should I have or is an overlap on the tarpaper necessary?

Answer:

There is no rule as to which direction the plywood should go and the tarpaper should overlap at least six inches.
