Question:

I am a blind chap who loves to work with carpentry and building. The only problem is it is hard to find instructions. I have a new home with the normal storage area under the front porch. Roof is cement, walls are poured concrete and a cement floor. Just bare walls with a metal insulated door to the storage area. It also has a vent to the outside. I know how to put shelves in but what do I do about insulation. It is only to be a storage area for boxes etc. No food storage. Do I block the air vent? Do I put vapour barrier on walls? Will I get moisture if I block the vent?

Answer:

As far as insulation goes, I wouldn't change my mind on what you planned but whatever you do, do not block off or in any way impede ventilation. The normal rule of thumb applies - nothing stored directly on the floor and no large surfaces leaning against walls. Air has to circulate around everything or some form of corrosion will take place. Rather than storing things on the floor, you can make pallets or, often people are anxious to get rid of them and they work very well indeed.
