Question:

The joists for the deck are extended from inside the house to form the floor base. I would like to know how to go about replacing the beams without tearing up the floor inside the house. Given that two or three joists are rotten at the juncture of the house, I am hesitant to simply nail new joists to the old ones. In addition, I would prefer not to use angle braces on the outside. A small deck 4 ft. by 9 ft. accessible by an ordinary all-season door from our second story bedroom. The deck is supported by eight joists turned on their side, extending from within the vinyl sided house. There are no angle braces supporting from the outside. Naturally, the deck floor runs the opposite direction over the joists. Some joists are rotten, hence, leakage to the dinning room below. Hopefully, there is a solution.

Answer:

About the best your going to do here is either tear up the floor inside or, better yet, drop the deck one step so winter's snow no longer builds up against your door. Neither option is a pleasant thought but once you're doing it, it might as well be done right.
