I am planning to add a second storey addition to an existing single storey addition (with an almost flat roof)that was constructed in the 1970's. The walls of the existing additon consist of 2x4 studs with sheathing and vinyl siding. Will these walls be structurally capable of supporting the second storey addition or will they have to be reinforced? If they will have to be reinforced how can this be done?
Answer:
Please don't take my word for all this because your local building authority may very well have a lot to say about your project and as you know, they're always right. If it was properly built in the first place you should not have a problem but while you'rea t it, you might want to think about cantelevering the floor of the second story addition to add floor space. It works very well.
