Question:

My friend has a ranch style house, which is about 25 years old. It was kind of "homemade", built by the owner - lots of "corners cut". He needs to replace the roof, and possibly side the house. The building inspector said things were structurally o.k. but once the roof was off, the "trusses" would need shoring up. Without changing the pitch of the what precautions do we need to take when roofing? I understand they do not make "low slope" shingles anymore. Do we need to use "tar" with the tar paper?

Answer:

At 3/12, your roof is considered "Low slope" and that means ice and water shield from the bottom edge all the way to the top. You then apply a 20-year asphalt shingle in what is termed "Low slope fashion"; that means instead of half the shingle overlapping what is underneath it, you overlap 2/3 and then apply a sealant where necessary. The bundles should tell you all about it.
