Question:

My wife and I would like to build an extension to our garage to make it a two-car garage. Because of limitations on our property line, we plan to add onto the back of the garage and have a double depth garage (as opposed to the traditional double width garage). My question for you is: What steps do we need to take in order to do this? We need a contractor to do the work. I believe we will need permission from the city (Ottawa (ON), in our case). Do we need an architect? An engineer?

Answer:

yes, you'll need a building permit but contractors can normally arrange for the drawings and permits for you. Do yourselves a favour, do not try to make the old room line up with the new because it will certainly create a bump that will be visible for ever. A foot higher or lower will not make enough difference to matter but aesthetically, its a different world.
