Question:

In the process of waterproofing my house, approximately half of my drive way will have to be torn up. I have received different quotes and as per usual none of them are the same. I live in London, Ontario and I'm pretty sure that there is a clay base here. One contractor told me that because I was disturbing the clay during the waterproofing process, I should remove all the clay and replace it with gravel or I would never have a good driveway. Another said all I need to do is fill in the waterproofed spot and maybe two feet on the rest of the driveway with gravel. I would leave the exposed gravel for a least a few months if not longer, and then finish the driveway with "stamped" cement. What is the appropriate way to handle my driveway situation?

Answer:

You certainly want to go through a winter with the exposed gravel on the driveway because otherwise, the newly installed area will settle and you don't want that. I see nothing wrong with having the gravel exposed until at least September two years down the road and then having the second contractor come in and cover it.
