Question:

We recently moved into a home that has an agragate driveway. At one time there was a finish (sealant) at one time as we see it on the stairwell and wall on the breezeway. We have asked all the home hardware type stores up here and went to some construction companies and they do not have an answer....we would like to know what to use to restore the drive to its original beauty...we find now the small rocks are starting to come away...espeically after shoveling snow off the drive this winter.

Answer:

If you live in an area where frost is problem, and it appears you do, the agragate driveway will sonner or later start to deteriorate. When water gets between the pebbles and then freezes, the pebbles pop. Freezing water splits mountains so we should not be surprised when Mother Nature does not get overly challenged by pebbles that are either glued to or bedded right into a product that is, after all, breakable. The damaged surface can be patched but there will be a colour difference and eventually other spots and the patches themselves too, will deteriorate.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
