Question:

I just purchased a home a year ago. Recently, I've noticed small cracks in the walls that weren't there a year ago. I've noticed that the cracks are along the "seams" (for lack of a better word). They are right where the walls are connected. There are also cracks appearing above my door frame and my son's closet door frame. What can cause this type of situation?

Answer:

No matter where you live, it takes a house some time to settle after its been built. In the Ottawa Valley (ON) it takes about eight years. That doesn't mean, of course, that its going to keep moving very much during all that time. The first couple of years there is though, quite a bit of movement. After about a3 or 4 years, the plaster cracking and most of the drywall nail popping should stop.
