I own a 5 acre lot and plan to build soon,a cottage style 900 sq.ft.I have heard of concrete pads,would this be a good idea if I don't require a basement.The house is then placed on pillars I assume on the pad.

Your idea will work for a cottage but I would not try to do that with a house unless I planned a 2' deep crawl space under the living cavity. It can still go on the pads but you'd be making abig mistake if you built it without consideration for a heated floor.
